One of the most common mistakes I see well-meaning parents make is rushing in to rescue their daughter from her own harsh self-talk. She says, “I’m so stupid,” and you immediately respond with, “No you’re not! You’re so smart, you did so well on that last test, you helped your friend last week, remember?”.
She says, “I’m so ugly”, you say “Oh no you are incredibly beautiful!”. While it’s coming from a loving place, this response often leaves teens feeling dismissed and sometimes even ashamed for expressing their thoughts. Instead of feeling uplifted, they may feel misunderstood and more alone.
So what’s a different way to build up that confidence you know will make her life better? In The Happiness Path (THP) group, we guide teen girls to develop self-awareness and resilience by helping them get curious about their inner world. As a parent, a powerful place to start is by simply listening to understand instead of listening to rescue. If your daughter says, “I can’t believe I said that, I’m so dumb,” try responding with something like: “That sounds really hard,” or “Sounds like you’re being pretty tough on yourself right now.”
This approach opens space for connection. If you can’t resist the urge to defend against this kind of thinking, you can always gently add, “Just for the record, I don’t see you that way,” and leave it at that. When teens feel heard, they’re more open to reflecting and discovering their own strengths. That’s where real confidence begins.
