Training Tips for Teen Girls
I’m on a rest day today, so I’m feeling pretty good, a little eager to run again, and a little tender in some spots. As I train for my half-marathon, it’s got me thinking a lot about the mind training aspect. Confidence specifically.
I hear so many teen girls treat confidence like a light switch, either it’s on or it’s not. They wait for one big moment to prove to themselves they’re confident: the right party invite, the perfect friend group, a flawless performance. And when that moment doesn’t arrive, self-doubt and criticism seeps in.
That waiting game steals time. It robs teens of small wins. It teaches that confidence is something to earn later, instead of something you can train for right now. I see girls doubting themselves, missing opportunities, tryouts, and experiences simply because they’re waiting to be ready.
I’m building a half-marathon training plan right now but it’s not just for my body, it’s for my courage & confidence. Training is teaching me that confidence is like a muscle: it responds to consistent reps and rest.
Here are 5 confidence training hacks I wish I’d known as a teen:
- Start small and repeat. Smiling at someone once a day beats waiting for the “perfect moment” to say hi.
- Celebrate all wins. Finished one lap? Complimented someone? Celebrate it all.
- Rest is progress. Recovery days- boundaries, quiet time, recharging are just as important as training days.
- Train with a crew. Coaches, friends, mentors, even furry companions help you show up. Share a goal, make it a group challenge, have fun!
- Practice gratitude. Notice what your body, mind, and soul do for you. Did your voice help you ask a question? Did your gut guide you to a quiet moment? Did your hand wave at your crush? Gratitude shifts the story from “fix this” to “thank you.”
If I could text my teen self, it would say-
Don’t wait to be brave. Start now. Start small. Keep going. Give yourself credit and a few laughs along the way!
