Preparing Your Teen for Womanhood
Teenhood is often framed as a time to “survive”, an emotionally charged blur of hormones, drama, and identity shifts. What if we reframed it as a powerful training ground for adulthood? In my health and movement coaching practice for women, Pivot Your Wellness, I regularly witness the long-term impact of missed opportunities during adolescence: disordered eating, rigid rules around exercise, a lack of body trust, difficulty setting boundaries, and confusion about self-worth. Truthfully, I’ve been through these challenges myself. These struggles don’t start in adulthood, they start early. And they can be prevented.
Preparing your teen for womanhood isn’t about telling her what to do; it’s about helping her build the skills, self-awareness, and habits that will allow her to make empowered decisions long after she’s left your home. It’s about teaching her how to care for her body without shame, to move it with joy rather than punishment, and to speak up for herself in a world that often tries to shrink girls down.
What we can start empowering in teenhood
Here’s what I see all too often in adult women that we can work to prevent in teens:
- Beliefs that eating is something to control, not something to enjoy.
- Attachment to exercise as a form of penance or a chore, rather than self-expression or vitality.
- An inability to say no, to ask for what they need, or to set clear boundaries in work, relationships, and healthcare settings.
- A deep disconnection from their bodies and what it means to be truly well- physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Wait, there’s hope! When we start intentionally teaching teens how to nourish themselves, honour their limits, and listen to their intuition, the trajectory changes.
Imagine if more teens learned to view food as fuel and joy instead of something to micromanage. If movement was introduced as a way to celebrate their strength, not chase a certain body type. What if they had the language to advocate for themselves at the doctor’s office, in school, and with friends- setting boundaries not as an act of rebellion, but as a tool for self-preservation?
Stronger teens, stronger communities
We wouldn’t just see stronger individuals, we’d see strong communities.
When girls grow up into women who trust their bodies, know their worth, and prioritize sustainable well-being, they lead differently. They parent differently. They work, love, and build differently. These are the women who challenge systems, nurture others, and model resilience, not through burnout, but through balance.
Teenhood is a bridge. Let’s make it count.
By investing time, compassion, and education into these formative years, we’re not just “getting them through” their teenage phase, we’re preparing them to thrive as women. All-star adults don’t happen by accident. They’re built, day by day, through small moments of learning, unlearning, and connection.
