Why I Love Virtual Sessions for Teen Girl Athletes (And Why They Do Too)
Let’s be honest, teen girl athletes are so busy!
Between early morning conditioning, after-school practices, games, school demands, friendships, and trying to have even a moment to decompress… their schedules are full.
And their sport? It’s not just something they do. It’s a huge part of who they are.
So when it comes to getting the most value out of their mental health support, the last thing we want to do is add one more place that can feel like too much.
That’s one of the biggest reasons I love virtual sessions.
It Fits Into Their Real Life (Not the Other Way Around)
There’s no commute.
No rushing across the city.
No trying to squeeze in one more stop between everything else.
Virtual sessions meet teen athletes where they already are.
Sometimes that looks like logging on after practice.
Sometimes it’s between homework and dinner.
Sometimes it’s the one quieter pocket in their week.
It removes a major barrier: time and energy.
And for parents, it matters too. One less drive, one less coordination piece, one less stressor in an already busy family schedule.
Support becomes something that fits, not something that adds pressure.
Comfort Changes Everything
This is the part that surprises people the most.
When teen girls are in their own space, real transformation can take place.
They’re not walking into a new office. Or sitting in an unusual way across from someone in an unfamiliar environment.
They’re:
- In their bedroom, surrounded by things that feel like them
- Curled up in a hoodie with their dog nearby
- Sitting in a space where they already feel safe
- Sometimes even moving, on a walk, pacing, or adjusting their setup
They can tilt the camera, move around, or sit how they want. It feels less formal and more natural.
And that matters.
Because when the nervous system feels safer and more regulated, we see:
- More openness
- More honesty
- More engagement
It becomes less about “saying the right thing” and more about actually being real.
It’s More Interactive Than You’d Think
There’s a common assumption that virtual = less engaging.
But in my experience, it’s often the opposite.
I can bring in tools in the moment:
- Visuals to explain something clearly
- A joint whiteboard to map out thoughts or patterns
- Exercises we can do together in real time
- Resources that meet exactly what’s coming up in session
It’s dynamic and collaborative.
It honestly feels like having more flexibility and creativity right at our fingertips.
The Hesitation Is Normal (And It Doesn’t Last Long)
Some girls are unsure at first. That makes sense. It’s different. It might feel a bit awkward initially.
But what I hear again and again is:
“I actually like this way more than I thought I would.”
Because they quickly realize:
- They still have full privacy
- They don’t have to “perform” in a formal setting
- They can show up as they are
- It fits into their life without adding stress
And once that pressure drops, they settle in.
Why Online Sessions Are Exactly What You're Looking For
Teen girl athletes are already holding a lot.
Pressure to perform.
To keep up.
To be “fine” even when they’re not.
The easier we make it for them to access mental health support, the more likely they are to actually use it.
Virtual sessions remove friction.
They create a space that feels:
- Safe
- Flexible
- Real
And when support feels like that, it becomes something they can return to consistently, not just when things hit a breaking point.
Virtual sessions aren’t a second-best option. For many teen girl athletes, they’re actually the better fit. They meet them where they are, physically, emotionally, and practically.
And when support fits into a teen’s world that’s when real growth, resilience, and confidence start to build.
